READ: JOHN 19:28-30 & MATTHEW 27:45-56
One would think that as Jesus hung on the cross and about to die, that it would look like utter defeat and that the devil and those looking on would have won. In the midst of His suffering, Jesus proclaims one of the most powerful words ever spoken on this earth that made heaven rejoice and the gates of hell fall to despair. These words were the battle cry of victory. Jesus said, “It is finished!”
Jesus did not say I am finished, but IT is finished. Jesus, in full control, knowing in advance that He would rise from the dead and ascend to heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father, confidently declared that He finished what He was called to do.
When Jesus declared these powerful words out of His mouth, the power of God manifested. First, the veil was torn in the temple. This veil separated man from the holy of holies, where God’s presence dwelt among the people and where the high priest would sacrifice the Lamb once per year to atone for the sins of the people. When Jesus cried out these words of victory, the veil was torn from top to bottom.
God poured His wrath on the sin upon Jesus on the cross, which made the way for anyone to come to God. Access to God was now possible. The age of grace had fully come so that all that believe and receive the forgiveness from the Lamb of God who paid for the sin of the world once and for all can have a relationship with God.
At the sound of Jesus’ voice, the earth quaked, the rocks were split, and graves were opened. Many who had faith in God and had died were raised from the dead. Not only was access to God possible through the death of Jesus on the cross, but those eternally powerful words of “it is finished” mocked and defeated death and the grave.
The blood of Jesus and the work of the cross was so powerful that God demonstrated His great power by showing His authority over the earth with an earthquake and by crushing the grave. This was evidence that Jesus was not just a man on the cross, but God on the cross! In fact, the centurion who was guarding Jesus saw this happen and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54).
There is nothing that you can add to the work of Jesus. The provision for access to God and salvation was finished. Your holiness and right standing with God was finished. Your healing that is needed in your body? Finished! The strength and energy that you need was already provided for you. You already have every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). Your victory over the familiar battle you often fight has been won. When Jesus says it has been done for you, then it has been finished.
Are you trusting in the finished work of Jesus, or are you trying to add to what He did on the cross? God desires that you fully rest in His finished work, believe that Jesus has already provided all that you need through His crucifixion, and freely receive from Him. You don’t have to labor for His righteousness, forgiveness, deliverance, healing, or even peace of mind (Matthew 11:28-30). Jesus labored for your rest when it comes to eternal and abundant life. Thank Him and receive the promise of His word that “It is finished.”
“But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ…I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing” (Galatians 6:14, 2:20).
