Balance is something that everyone strives for. The one day when we're able to coordinate our responsibilities and priorities in perfect harmony. We find that the perfect harmony is difficult to achieve, with so many different things calling your our attention. We develop stress and pressure from the lack of inconsistencies in our lives. Our lives can feel inconsistent and not reflect the things that mean so much to us. We say we value "these things", but we are not experiencing the things we value so much.
We can say we value "a healthy lifestyle, but I don't have the energy.” "I love spending time with my family, but I have to work.” “I would love to serve more at church, but I don't have time in my schedule.” We have to learn to make decisions, boundaries, priority and take responsibility for things in our lives.
The bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1 "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
A part of achieving balance is making decisions. We must decide where we are going to place our time, attention, energy and finances. Making decisions is about making forward movement. They help us make progress even when we say no. By saying no, we are saying yes to something that has more importance. You must spend some time finding out what's really important to you. No one else can do it for you. When you're done then it will be easier for you to decide where you want to spend your time. Balance is not about giving equal attention to everything in your life. Balance is about giving appropriate attention to those things.
We must give order and priority to the people, relationships and responsibilities in our lives. We must regain a sense of priority or else everything is going to feel urgent. Everything from obligations to unchecked tasks will pull on you, screaming "what about me?” The reason we may not have peace is from having something out of order. We are giving priority and attention to an area over other important areas. You can become so focused on finishing the finale on Netflix, you're not spending time study for the class you're failing. You want to go to church, but you're hungover from the party last night. We must give order to our lives. We have to identify and establish priorities in our lives.
Some things that keep us from having balance:
Indecision- fear of making the wrong decision, fear of missing out "what are my options".
Lack of priority- you don't know what's important
Lack of boundaries- you have no walls in your life to distinguish one area from the next. Everything is blended together.
Lack of responsibility- you don't know what areas you have control over, so you're not doing anything about it.
We are in relationship with God. He wants you to win.God wants to help you find that missing balance in your life. He wants to help you build healthy boundaries in your life. He wants to show you the areas of your life you've been neglecting and how to establish order. God wants to help you in every area of your life even the broken places.
This week, set aside private time with God. In prayer, ask Him to highlight areas of your life that need balance. Afterwards, begin to look at how you can become more decisive, create boundaries, make priority and take responsibility for the things in your life.
